Google Stadia - The future is not a box

Here’s a first look at Microsoft’s xCloud for the web

This is what Xbox looks like in a browser

xcloudweb.0.jpg

Microsoft has started testing its xCloud game streaming through a web browser. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans tell The Verge that employees are now testing a web version of xCloud ahead of a public preview. The service allows Xbox players to access their games through a browser, and opens up xCloud to work on devices like iPhones and iPads.

Much like how xCloud currently works on Android tablets and phones, the web version includes a simple launcher with recommendations for games, the ability to resume recently played titles, and access to all the cloud games available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Once you launch a game it will run fullscreen, and you’ll need a controller to play Xbox games streamed through the browser.

It’s not immediately clear what resolution Microsoft is streaming games at through this web version. The software maker is using Xbox One S server blades for its existing xCloud infrastructure, so full 4K streaming won’t be supported until the backend hardware is upgraded to Xbox Series X components this year.

Microsoft is planning to bundle this web version of xCloud into the PC version of the Xbox app on Windows 10, too. The web version appears to be currently limited to Chromium browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, much like Google’s Stadia service. Microsoft is planning some form of public preview of xCloud via the web in the spring, and this wider internal testing signals that the preview is getting very close.

:lolmor:

Stadia Leadership Praised Development Studios For 'Great Progress' Just One Week Before Laying Them All Off

tylngxxtoxsoiqaaxwck.jpg

Developers at Google’s recently formed game studios were shocked February 1 when they were notified that the studios would be shut down, according to four sources with knowledge of what transpired. Just the week prior, Google Stadia vice president and general manager Phil Harrison sent an email to staff lauding the “great progress” its studios had made so far.

Mass layoffs were announced a few days later, part of an apparent pattern of Stadia leadership not being honest and upfront with the company’s developers, many of which had upended their lives and careers to join the team.

“[Stadia Games and Entertainment] has made great progress building a diverse and talented team and establishing a strong lineup of Stadia exclusive games,” Harrison’s January 27 email read, according to sources.

“We will confirm the SG&E investment envelope shortly, which will, in turn, inform the SG&E strategy and 2021 [objectives and key results].”

Google responds after Stadia owners accuse it of breaking promises over game performance

Google faces possible class-action lawsuit over game resolution on Stadia

To say the launch of Google’s Stadia platform was “rough” is an understatement. A huge lack of games, miscommunication with eager early adopters, and more plagued the first few months of Stadia. Among those problems was game quality, specifically that games like Destiny 2 weren’t 4K on Stadia as Google had heavily implied. Now, Google may face a class-action lawsuit over 4K game claims on Stadia.

A lawsuit originally filed in New York in October 2020 has recently been surfaced by ClassAction.org as the suit moved to New York Federal Court. The case alleges that Google “greatly exaggerated the streaming quality and display resolution” in order to “juice subscription numbers” for Stadia ahead of the platform’s launch.

We addressed this issue* around the time of Stadia’s launch, talking about how Google was indeed exaggerating the quality of games. It’s true that Google did explicitly say all games would be streamed at 4K 60fps, but it was later clarified that some games would render at lower resolutions and be upscaled to hit the optional 4k60 stream that Google was originally referring to.

While Google’s claims were misleading, they boil down to miscommunication and mismanagement — seemingly a pattern Stadia’s leadership just can’t break.

Stadia Developers Can't Fix The Bugs In Their Own Game Because Google Fired Them

wrbmunv0qe4qds5bjsk5.jpg

Apart from the sacking of about 150 developers, the throttling of Google Stadia has left a ton of early adopters well and truly in the lurch. Stadia was maligned from the start, and if the latest experience of Stadia users is any indication, it’s sure as hell not leaving a positive impression on the way out.

One of the few games that Google actually owns — although it was released first on consoles and PC before making its Stadia debut — was Journey to the Savage Planet. Google acquired Typhon Studios before the end of 2019, and the deal meant that Journey to the Savage Planet was one of the few games that came free with the Stadia Pro subscription.

Typhon Studios was the first studio acquired by Google, but with the effective closure of Google’s gaming ambitions, the developers there were let go with everyone else. For users who are still playing on Stadia however — at least the ones who aren’t suing Google — that’s caused a bit of a problem, because there’s nobody around to fix their games.

Anyone who has tried to play Journey to the Savage Planet — which only came to Stadia Pro a few weeks ago — has run into a string of bugs, including freezing on the main menu, crashes, and hanging. And because it’s on Stadia, where the game files are stored on a server farm well away from your PC, regular users have no remit for troubleshooting the problem themselves.

Unable to play Journey in single-player or co-op, one user reached out to the game’s publisher, 505 Games. After being told by Stadia’s social team that they would work with the publisher on a fix, the publisher said: Actually, we can’t fix this for you at all.

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/stadia-was-working-on-savage-planet-2-a-multiplayer-project-and-more/

"The Google cloud gaming division cancelled a multiplayer game led by a former Assassin’s Creed creative, a sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet and backed out of proposals for Hideo Kojima (Death Stranding) and Yu Suzuki (Outrun) to create exclusive games for Stadia, the sources said.

The Kojima Productions project is understood to have been positioned as an episodic horror game. Sources indicated that the Japanese studio was keen to innovate in the cloud gaming space, but the deal was ultimately blocked by Stadia GM Phil Harrison last year.

This is possibly the project designer Hideo Kojima was referring to last summer, when he told a Japanese publication he had recently seen a “major” project cancelled. “I’m pretty pissed, but that’s the games industry for you,” he said."

Report: Stadia Blew Millions On Red Dead Redemption 2 And Other Ports

Just how badly did Google’s Stadia video game streaming service flop when it launched back in 2019? According to a new report by Bloomberg, it underperformed its sales target by hundreds of thousands of users, despite spending “tens of millions of dollars” secure ports of big blockbuster games.

It’s not hard to see why either, considering many of the features Stadia promoted during its reveal were missing at launch That’s not to mention the leap of faith the business model asked of users requiring them to pay full price for individual games on an as yet untested and unproven new technology.

Meanwhile, Google apparently paid publishers like Ubisoft and Take-Two small fortunes to ensure games like Red Dead Redemption 2 were available on the service when it released. At the same time, the service suffered from a lack of games overall, with Business Insider previously reporting that Google failed to offer enough money to indie developers to win their games over to its burgeoning platform.

Stadia was working on Savage Planet 2, a multiplayer project and more

THIS MONTH’S DECISION TO END INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT RESULTED IN DOZENS OF CANCELLATIONS, SOURCES SAY

savage_planet_keyart-1024x576.jpg

Google‘s Stadia team cancelled dozens of projects and third-party licensing deals as part of its shift away from video game production in recent months, people with knowledge of its plans told VGC.

The Google cloud gaming division cancelled a multiplayer game led by a former Assassin’s Creed creative, a sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet and turned down proposals for Hideo Kojima (Death Stranding) and Yu Suzuki (Outrun) to create exclusive games for Stadia, the sources said.

UPDATE: A Google Stadia spokesperson has denied elements of this story and claimed that it does not “have anything, nor have announced anything, with Kojima or Yu Suzuki”. [Editor’s note: VGC did not claim it had announced, or currently have, games in development from the creators.]’

Asked specifically about the Kojima games pitch, a spokesperson told VGC: “We talk to partners all the time in situations that don’t result in a project or even a proposal. This is very common. Speculating that two parties that speak regularly in this industry leads to proposals or otherwise, is inaccurate.”

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/stadia-was-working-on-savage-planet-2-a-multiplayer-project-and-more/

I look at that almost opposite. Stadia is giving away Premiere Editions and using Village as the carrot to get people on the platform.

Good for the Stadians! I know that meant a lot to the community. They needed this!

I'm still not sure what the hell the deal is with RE:Verse. It's just deathmatch? Will anyone care in 2021? I was so interested in the RE3 MP mode, it was one of the reasons I just bought it but it has already been abandoned and I can't believe 5 minutes would be long enough on the timer.

The Stadia Premiere bundle though is just a hardware bundle containing the Chromecast Ultra and controller (it's not the subscription that gets you free games). I'm pretty sure that's all on Google for including the hardware.

There also was a leak several months back that said Google paid Capcom 10 million to port RE7 and Village to the platform.

What version is it going to be? Stadia still getting last gen versions is not a good look....

I know the Reddit are going crazy right now as they did with Fifa but it annoys me that Google sang about the power and yet they’re still getting last gen versions....
