Sony’s Newly-Acquired FireSprite Making a UE5 Horror Game, TLOU2 Designer May be Involved

WCCFfirespriteplaystation.jpg

Late last year Sony added UK-based developer FireSprite to its every-expanding PlayStation Studios roster, and they certainly haven’t wasted any time getting them to work. They’re making the PlayStation VR 2 exclusive Horizon: Call of the Mountain and it’s strongly rumored they’re also behind a revival of the Twisted Metal franchise, but that’s not all they’ve got on their plates!

According to a newly posted job ad, FireSprite is also working on a “AAA narrative driven horror-adventure game in Unreal 5.” Further perusing of FireSprite’s job ads reveals their “AAA multiplayer action title” (which many suspect is Twisted Metal) will also be tapping Unreal Engine 5, so it seems like that will probably be the standard engine for the studio going forward.

While FireSprite making a horror game may seem a little out of left field, it’s actually fairly comfortably within their wheelhouse. They previously made the horror-roguelike The Persistence, which Wccftech called “more than worthy” in our positive review. In another interesting wrinkle, clever fans have brought up the fact that former The Last of Part II level designer Pete Ellis announced around a year ago that he’s working as a director on “story-driven adventure game” at FireSprite. Was he talking about FireSprite’s recently-outed horror game? Of course, we don’t know for sure, but it seems pretty likely…

Sony ‘could be working’ to bring proper PS3 game emulation to PS5, it’s claimed

MANY FANS WERE DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN THAT PS PLUS PREMIUM WILL ONLY INCLUDE PS3 GAME STREAMING

ps3-1024x611.jpg

Sony Interactive Entertainment could be working to bring PlayStation 3 games to PlayStation 5 without the requirement to stream them over the internet.

That’s according to Venturebeat journalist Jeff Grubb, whose sources have reportedly indicated that behind the scenes Sony could be working on an emulation solution for PS3 games on PS5.

Earlier this week Sony announced that it would be bringing classic games to its latest console via its new PS Plus Premium subscription.

When it launches in June for $17.99/£13.49 a month, subscribers will gain benefits including access to 340 games from the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PSP generations.

However, while the majority of those games will be available to download and play on PS5 via emulation, Sony confirmed that PS3 games would only be playable via cloud streaming.

According to Venturebeat’s Grubb, however, the service could eventually receive PS3 emulation similar to the other retro systems it’s set to support.

“Since talking about this all week, I’ve looked, I’ve asked… it sounds like Sony might be working on emulation for PS3 on PS5,” he said. “It may take some time.

“I wish they would come out and tell us that. Tell us that you care about this stuff because that is what was missing from the PS Plus announcement… to me, it seemed like they didn’t care about any of it. They just slapped it together, put a new name on it and sold it”.

While this hasn’t been stated publicly, the consensus is that due to the unique architecture of the PS3 and its infamous Cell processor, emulating the system within the PS5 in software (in the same way that the Xbox Series X emulates an Xbox 360) would be incredibly difficult.

However, fans aren’t convinced. YouTuber and developer at Night Dive Studios ModernVintageGamer tweeted in the wake of this week’s announcement that emulating the PS3 on the PS5 was “absolutely possible” but that “Sony has never been interested in investing the millions to make it happen”.

Currently, many classic PlayStation games are currently only playable natively on the PlayStation 3, including Metal Gear Solid 4, and entries in the InFamous, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank and Killzone series.

VGC’s Jordan Middler wrote in a column this week that he was disappointed by how Sony seemingly continues to overlook the classic console.

“It’s truly a shame to see how PlayStation continues to treat its third generation. Much of what’s so good about the platform now, namely its focus on big, shiny first-party experiences was birthed from the PS3.

“The excuses about how technically challenging it might be to get PS3 games running natively on the PS5 hold less and less water as more emulators emerge in the PC scene, running on hardware far below that of a PlayStation 5.”

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-could-be-working-to-bring-proper-ps3-game-emulation-to-ps5-its-claimed/

Kojima Productions is relocating after five years

HIDEO KOJIMA BIDS FAREWELL TO THE OFFICE WHERE DEATH STRANDING WAS MADE

DEATH-STRANDING%E2%84%A2_20191024181234-1024x576.jpg

Kojima Productions is relocating after five years at its Tokyo-based office.

Studio boss Hideo Kojima bid farewell to the office where Death Stranding was made in a series of tweets on Thursday.

“Today is the day we say goodbye to the entrance, the Ludens hallway, and the kitchen that have been our home for a little over five years,” he posted alongside images of the vacated office.

As is common with Kojima’s social media comments, his tweet raised more questions than it did answers.

Kojima Productions said in October 2020 that it was staffing up for a new, still unannounced game project. It’s possible the company may be relocating to a larger home, or simply to a new office that better meets its requirements.

Kojima founded Kojima Productions in 2005, under the control of Konami, where he worked for over 30 years and created the Metal Gear series.

After splitting from Konami in 2015 he reformed Kojima Productions as an independent studio, backed by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The company’s first game was 2019’s Death Stranding for PS4. A PC version was released in summer 2020. The Director’s Cut hit PS5 last year and was released for PC on March 30.

Last November Kojima Productions announced it had established a TV and film studio based in Los Angeles, and according to Kojima its work will begin in earnest this year.

At the start of 2022, Kojima teased his plans for the year ahead, including a “radical” new project and experimentation with video and radio (he launched a podcast in February).

Earlier this month Kojima was awarded a prestigious award for fine arts from the Japanese government’s Agency of Cultural Affairs.

Sony’s Bungie acquisition saw more Twitter discussion than Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal

TWITTER SHARES INTERNAL FIGURES FOR GAMING

PlayStation_Bungie_1920x1080-1280x720.webp

New figures released by Twitter show that Sony’s acquisition of Bungie generated more discussion than Microsoft‘s acquisition of Activision Blizzard on the platform.

Twitter’s global head of creator and gaming content partnerships, Rishi Chadha, tweeted internal Twitter data that showed when the frequency of tweets about video games spiked throughout the past three months.

Although the information provided by Chadha doesn’t give any exact figures, it shows that there were four clear discussion peaks between January 1 and March 31 this year.

These were on the days that Microsoft announced it was acquiring Activision Blizzard, Sony announced it was acquiring Bungie, Elden Ring was released and Fortnite‘s new season started.

Twitter’s data shows that the release of Elden Ring generated the most discussion by far on the platform, likely due to the many millions of players buying the game on day one and sharing their initial impressions.

The second-most discussed topic was Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, followed by Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which gained slightly more buzz than Fortnite’s new season.

Chadha followed up his tweet with another showing the top 10 games tweeted about the most globally in the past three months.

Top of the list was Genshin Impact, with Wordle at number two. This is likely because Genshin Impact is enjoying success worldwide (especially in Asia), whereas Wordle is naturally mainly popular in English-speaking countries.

Elden Ring came in at number 7 in the chart, while Minecraft claimed the number 10 spot.

Xbox parent Microsoft confirmed in January that it planned to acquired Activision Blizzard in the games industry’s biggest-ever deal, valued at $68.7 billion.

Just 13 days later, Sony revealed a big-money acquisition of its own, announcing that it plans to acquire Destiny and Halo studio Bungie in a deal worth $3.6 billion.

Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan later confirmed the PlayStation firm intends to make more acquisitions.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer said last October that the company was “definitely not done” buying game studios, and that there was “no quota” on the number of teams it wants to acquire.

Stray Rated In South Korea, Suggesting A Release Isn’t Too Far Off

Stray-1-min-768x419.png

BlueTwelve Studio‘s upcoming Stray has been rated in South Korea, suggesting a release can’t be too far off.

While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, publisher Annapurna Interactive said last month that the Stray is still on track to launch this year. Last year, the game was pegged for an early 2022 release, although that hasn’t happened, but hopefully it won’t be too far off.

Developed by BlueTwelve Studio, Stray sees players hopping into the paws of a homeless cat in a city populated by robots. It’s a puzzle-based adventure game, where you’ll interact with the environment across the cybercity in playful ways that only a cat can do. You’re not alone either, as our furry friend will get help from a flying drone named B12.

Stray is due for release on PS5, PS4, and PC in 2022.

The PlayStation Studios website banner has added Death Stranding, leading to acquisition speculation

SONY PUBLISHED KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS’ DEBUT GAME FOR PS4 AND PS5

playstation-studios-banner-updated.jpg

Sony Interactive Entertainment has updated the PlayStation Studios website banner to include Death Stranding, leading to speculation that it may have acquired developer Kojima Productions.

As spotted by a Resetera user, an image of Death Stranding’s Sam Bridges has replaced one of Concrete Genie previously included on the banner.

Other changes include the addition of Demon’s Souls (Sony acquired the game’s developer Bluepoint last year) and updated MLB, Horizon and Gran Turismo images.

UPDATE: Hideo Kojima has since tweeted the image too, before later claiming that the studio will remain independent.

ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: Hideo Kojima founded Kojima Productions in 2005, under the control of Konami, where he worked for over 30 years and created the Metal Gear series.

After splitting from Konami in 2015, he reformed Kojima Productions as an independent studio, backed by PlayStation.

The company’s first game was Death Stranding, which Sony published for PS4 in 2019 and for PS5 in the form of 2021’s Director’s Cut. PC versions of the titles were published by 505 Games.

In March, Kojima revealed that the studio was relocating after five years at its Tokyo-based office, although the reason for the move wasn’t specified.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan recently confirmed that Sony has more acquisitions planned following a number of recent buyouts.

Over the past year the platform holder has acquired Haven, Bluepoint Games, Housemarque, Nixxes Software and Firesprite.

It was also announced in January that Sony plans to acquire Halo creator Bungie in a deal worth $3.6 billion.

“We’re in a really good place with PlayStation Studios and have been for the past few years,” Ryan told the latest PlayStation podcast. “The critical success and the commercial success of the games that they’ve been making… that has given us permission to invest heavily in content creation.”

He added: “We’re growing our studios organically and we’re growing through acquisition. We acquired five studios during the course of 2021, we’re in discussions with Bungie and we have more planned. This is getting us into a virtuous cycle where success begets success.”

Bluepoint Games quando a cortina caiu antes da hora: " We are fully independent, self-funded studio "

Hideo Kojima’s Xbox project was ‘still on a couple of weeks ago’, it’s claimed

UPDATE COMES AMID SPECULATION THAT PLAYSTATION MAY HAVE ACQUIRED KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS

hideo-kojima-58-1280x918.jpg

Hideo Kojima‘s long-rumoured Xbox project was still on as of a “couple of weeks ago”, it’s been claimed.

It was reported in April 2021 that Microsoft was in talks to sign the next game from the Japanese designer best known for the Metal Gear Solid series.

And last July, it was claimed that Microsoft and Kojima had signed a letter of intent stating that they planned to work together on a new Xbox game.

In a new update on his premium Giant Bomb show Grubbsnax (transcribed by VGC), VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb said those plans were still in place.

“As of a couple of weeks ago, the Xbox and Kojima deal was still on,” he claimed.

The update was delivered amid speculation that Sony may have acquired Kojima Productions, following Death Stranding’s inclusion in a promotional banner for PlayStation first-party studios.

Grubb went on to say: “This isn’t based on the information I had last year, this is more recent than that. This is still on”.

He added: “Does this mean that PlayStation couldn’t have acquired Kojima Productions? Not necessarily”.

Kojima founded Kojima Productions in 2005, under the control of Konami, where he worked for over 30 years and created the Metal Gear series.

After splitting from Konami in 2015 he reformed Kojima Productions as an independent studio, backed by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Ghost of Tsushima Dev Is Moving on After Two Years of Updates

Ghosting

ghost-of-tsushima-update.900x.jpg

Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch seems to be moving on from its open world epic following close to two years of post-launch support. The game's latest update, patch 2.18, released early this week, adjusting various aspects of the title's dedicated co-op multiplayer mode, Legends. It also included a couple of minor tweaks to the game's single player campaign.

It's the statement at the bottom of update 2.18's patch notes that's making headlines, however. It reads: "While we aren’t actively working on any additional patches at the moment, we will continue to monitor feedback on the community-run Gotlegends subreddit and messages sent to @SuckerPunchProd on Twitter for any high priority bugs or issues that emerge."

It continues: "We want to say a huge THANK YOU to the entire community for the incredible amount of support and feedback we’ve gotten since launch. When Legends launched in October 2020, we never expected to have such an active community more than a year and a half later, and we could not be more thankful to everyone who has been with us on this journey!"

Again, it looks like this is the end of the line for Ghost of Tsushima — and that comes as no real surprise. It's been heavily suggested that the bulk of Sucker Punch moved onto the studio's next project a long time ago — that project supposedly being a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Surely an easy game for Sony to greenlight, seeing as Jin's initial adventure has sold extremely well since its original PlayStation 4 release in 2020.

■ Story

Lillet Blan was very excited.

Her heart had been racing since the moment she heard. Lillet had been invited to enroll into a Magic Academy where only talented youths were personally sought out by the greatest wizards. The school was lead by the famous wizard, Gammel Dore, who had once defeated the Archmage. And the campus on which they study, the Silver Star tower, was once the destroyed Archmage’s castle.

The tower was still full of unsolved mysteries and dangers, and this attracted many who had their own personal reasons in mind. Lillet had opened her first grimoire, and began her studies. But only five days later, a terrifying disaster threatens the academy, and all lives are lost. All except she, who had traveled back through time without knowing why…

Can Lillet come closer to the truth by reliving those repeating days? Can she end the nightmare at the end of those five days?

To avoid constant death, open the grimoires once again.

He founded the Magic Academy on the Silver Star Tower which was once the Archmage’s castle, and invited promising youths from around the kingdom in hopes of educating the next generation of magicians. It seems the school is kind of dangerous, because students go missing every once in a while, but every magician in the kingdom dreams of studying under Professor Gammel.

—Dragons are extremely powerful, but take time to hatch from their eggs.

Take Advantage of Enemy Affinity to Gain the Upper Hand in Battle

There are four types of magic (Glamour, Necromancy, Sorcery, and Alchemy), and each can summon its own unique units.

Additionally, there are two types of familiars: Substance and Astral. Astral familiars are extremely weak to magic attacks, but physical attacks have no effect on them. They are a good choice against powerful physical attack users.

Considering your affinity with the enemy and summoning the familiars that will gain you the upper hand is the key to victory.

—The Homunculus’ ability “Clairvoyance” allows Astral familiars to be hit with physical attacks.

—The Grimalkin’s ability “Sleep” can put even powerful enemies down to rest.

■ OnceMore New Features

High-Resolution Graphics

With high-definition graphics, the game’s detailed visuals are clearer than ever. And since the aspect ratio is wider, it is easier to understand the magic battle playing field.

New System: “Great Magic”

Four types of “Great Magic” that can be used during battle have been implemented. While Great Magic can only be activated a limited number of times, one use alone can change the state of battle—“Mana Burst” shoots a flame that deals damage to a wide range; “Resurrection” recovers the HP of injured party members; and so on.

—Wipe out your enemies with the Great Magic attack Mana Burst! You can also enjoy lively cut-in animations.

New System: “Skill Tree”

In GrimGrimoire OnceMore, missions are set separately from the conditions to clear each stage. The coins earned by completing tasks can be used to strengthen summoning circles and familiars.

—How you upgrade is up to you. Coins can be refunded, so try out various upgrades.
